Sean John felt defeated. It was because of Dr Pantigal's trickery that he couldn't reveal the truth to this small island village. Without knowing all the facts, these native islanders shunned Sean John and cast him away. Truthfully, Sean John was their only hope for survival.
He was even having a difficult time mustering a crew together for his sea vessel.
