Disambiguate

These are the worst operating instructions ever. It's got far too many steps listed, and it even contradicts itself. I refuse to follow these directions until the company hires someone to disambiguate this circuitous list.

Laciniate

This is why I hired the best pathfinder recommended to me. The astute native led me down a laciniate trail, with no pattern to its harsh forks and abrupt about-faces.

Moniker

It's a low point in popularity for Sean John. The hot new moniker that the locals were calling him roughly translated to the following : "boy who kidnaps animals for pleasure '. It was a lot snappier in their tongue.

Tumultuary

The highways devolved into lawless wilderness. Immediately after the attack, they became nothing but a tumultuary maze of wreckage and sneaky bandits.

Rident

Seth scooped up the exhausted dog and headed back to the car, ending the visit to the park. Both dog and man were rident, with broad smiles on their faces.

Clement

The Prince of the island is generous and clement. Any convicted criminal in his jurisdiction can appeal their sentence after six months. If jailors can't vouch good behavior and the lawbreaker appears regretful, the Prince will pardon them.

Environs

Sean John is the only man who can dive so deep into the waters unprotected with a handful of feed and emerge without a scratch. He won't hesitate to tell you that below the ocean surface, in the sharks' environs, is perhaps the only place he truly feels at home.

Blithesome

Harry was probably Sean John's favorite shark, if really once could be pointed out. Just like a parent with more than one child, he'd never admit it, expect to Harry alone. This was the most blithesome shark he'd encountered - always a broad smile all across his gullet, always wanting to play. Sean John tried showing others what a shark smile, grin, and frown look like, but it seems that he alone has that perception.

Garboil

As soon as the flag dropped, the contestants bolted out of the the starting line. They dived and launched, landed and missed. They fumbled and wiggled, zipped and zagged. The field was a garboil of darting bodies. The Easter egg hunt was a success.

Droke

On the third day of their journey, the group's feet were starting ache, their bodies' soreness reaching an unbearable point. Morale was low. When they encountered a droke, they nearly quit. They could see across the long, descending slope into the bare valley below.

Epithalamion

It's damned fortunate that our lovely old Uncle Terry just so happens to be one of the top literary practitioners in the country. Maybe it was just the fifth whiskey sneaking up on me, or maybe just the intoxicating atmosphere of an older brother's wedding, but I've never heard more beautiful words spoken. Noone was surprised to hear the most touching epithalamion we'd ever hear. He surely spent weeks composing that heart-rending poem about the two best lovebirds I've everything known.

Flak

Sean John knew that his decision was going to be an unpopular one with the inhabitants of the island of Hon'o'wala, but even he underestimated the volume of flak he would receive from the public. He was almost afraid to show his face in public.

Beget

It's said that the world is a fair place... A circular and reciprocal arrangement of emotions and actions. You get back what you put in. What goes around comes around. The good deeds you selflessly do for others beget the same treatment for you.

Sparge

I'll give you a million bucks to slap this inconsiderate egotist in the face. Make it 2 . Seeing as how it'll be an iou with a due date of hell freezing over, I'll keep raising my offer until you accept.

You know it would be worth it. This guy brings a bag full of pennies into the bank and PLOP,  sparges them all over the counter, demanding the teller count each and every one, even the dozens that roll away underneath your feet.

Indelible

Many people inquire into Sean John's secret shark taming process. How does he transition the wild shark into a life of adventure and human cooperation? Why is he the only man in the world who can deftly achieve this feat? It is a mystery that Sean John is in no hurry to solve.

The truth is that he's not exactly sure why it is only him with this skill. He communes with the sharks, and leaves them with experiences so indelible that the creatures remain loyal until their dying breath.

Bel-esprit

With dozens of essays published in subjects from historical poetry to geological studies, her talents and interests show no bound.

Leviathan

There were parts of the ocean where even Sean John and his sharks didn't dare venture. Deep, dark, valleys underwater. Treacherous and dangerous. Pockets of water inhabited by terrifying creatures of wicked shapes and unimaginable sizes. One creature from these depths Sean John accidentally discovered on his ship's radar. It was a leviathan so massive that Sean John thought it must be a man-made vessel.

Verbicide

I never knew a guy as enthusiastic as Planky Wilson. He was kinda like an oracle, in that he always had an answer to everything. He was kinda like a politician in that his answers were always made up. Every six months or so he'd have a brand new catch phrase that he'd spout out any time he could. He practiced verbicide on those by drilling them to exhaustion. It took him a while to figure out everyone got tired of him and his catch phrase 2 weeks after he so proudly unveiled it.

Soothsay

I can look back on this day and see the pivot point of my life. If I had the ability to soothsay at that time, and I could've seen what I become when I choose to join the program, I never would've done it. I've done a lot of things I'm not proud of. A lot of things I can never make up for.

Grabble

Princess Monolawa gulped down an involuntary retch. The rank pile of half-digested shark stomach insides overpowered the air. It looked like Teeter had been having quite quite diverse diet. Sean John didn't hesitate. He kneeled down next to the steaming pile of filth, shoved his arm in, and grabbled for the missing stone.

Tuesday, May 13, 2014

Ad hominem

It's just 2 days before the Island Nation Summit. Princess Monolawa looks at hear options. If Dr. Pantigal's threats are true, than the entire continent is in danger if the ceremonies go as planned. And she is powerless to warn anyone. Perhaps if she makes a coy public appeal, one that won't violate Pantigal's obscene and arbitrary demand for silence. She could appeal not to people's logical side, but their baser instincts. Making an ad hominem argument to delay the summit would be a long shot. It would make her highly unpopular, regardless if it worked or not.

Frippery

The very first time I met the illustrious and ostentatious Jane McGonagall, I was confused. I couldn't tell if she was prepared for a costume party later that evening, or if she simply dressed herself with an eye toward extreme showiness. Of course we all know now that Jane practiced frippery in its pure form - a woman who wasn't afraid to show off. A woman who simply enjoyed being looked at and approached.

Flit

Down the lovers lay, bodies and minds free to wander. They look at each other, at the ceiling, at the curtain and the sunlight streaming into the bedroom. They mumble and giggle and marvel at one another. Time flits by like a careless leaf.

Scintillate

Sean John lay in the bed, staring at the ceiling of a hut. Princess Monolawa fast asleep beside him. Though he wants to remain and comfort her when she wakes, he needs to formulate a plan of attack for tomorrow's mission. His mind never scintillates in the morning without a shirt stroll on the beach.

Spumescent

Sean John the Shark Tamer gunned the boat engine. If he didn't make it back to the mainland in the next 5 minutes, Dr Pantigal's evil plan would launch unchallenged. The boat roared through the ocean. In the spumescent trail behind, the fins of several sharks just broke the surface. Seat John's backup.

Grimalkin

When we visited grandma's house, before the accident, my memories seem highly exaggerated. When I recall the staircase leading up to the front door, I picture an entryway to a royal castle, with enough steps to make you want a cup of water on the way up. I remember the small foyer to seem to be a hub of activity, our family's grand central. Aunts, uncles, cousins, neighbors always going in and out. And once you got through the greeting area into the living room, there grandma would be sitting in her throne. A wise old lady with a broad smile on her face, she was always happy to see me. Her grimalkin would purr to welcome the visitors. The feline had puffy, long hair, and was surely as old as grandma.

Anagnorisis

Fate had brought these three men together for a reason. Though the lights in the bar were dim, illumination shined on their lives as they realized what they all had in common. They reached their moment of anagnorisis when they simultaneously discovered they had all been slighted by the same woman.

Immiscible

When I saw the slip of paper indicating who my roommate was to be for the whole duration of the trip, my visions of a trip to Paradise quickly faxed. Steve Holt. If ever there were two immiscible personalities.... I could hardly spend 15 minutes on the bus with Steve without fantasizing about banishing him to a year in Kathmandu. This whole 3 weeks, spent together in the small room?

Leveret

Uncle Stanley fetched the trap out of the hole and brought it right down in front of my face. There it was, a tiny little furry creature, squirming and sad looking,  jumping up on the side of the cage. This little leveret was terrified, and if old Uncle Stanley weren't there to scold me about it, I'd just as soon have let the little guy run off to his bunny mommy and daddy.

Fussbudget

Terry had never lived with a roommate before. But here he was, out at college sharing an apartment with a near stranger. He only wished he hadn't gotten such a fussbudget for the roommate. Every little thing that Terry left out on the counter top or in the living room, Roommate Brad would complain about.

Guile

A self-made fortune by the age of 21 allowed Arnold Brandinski to quit college with no remorse. Not that he had much of that, anyway. Remorse, guilt , regret, compassion, sympathy. These where qualities that would've only gotten in the way of his money making operations. It was with unrepentant guile and dedication to nobody but himself that he elevated his social class with rapidity.

Noetic

His was a childhood long ago, a time purposely pushed aside in the memory storage area. With a seemingly finite ability to retain memories, Albus was only too happy to choose those years of superstition and religious fear to forget about. His world is now built upon science and algorithms, a noetic lifestyle defined by logic and forethought. The days of staying up late praying to his bedroom ceiling, asking nobody to help cure his sister's sickness, were gone.

Totem

He had first stepped foot into these woods so many years ago. Since he first found this mysterious pedestal lying in the dirt, life had moved on. Once a curious and investigative young boy, he would climb the trees nearby, the ones with the thick branches, and hide for hours, hoping to uncover some secret. Spying on this ancient mound of material, he would ponder the possibilities of its existence.

Was it made by men? Or was it natural? The patterns on the surface were so intricate and precise, it seemed like the hand of man must've had its influence on it. But the shapes were nothing that he recognized. And it's flawless fusion with the ground made it seem as if it had grown straight out of the earth, some extraordinary burst of natural power and expression. Perhaps an attempt by the very core of the earth to communicate with the creatures parading about on the surface.

The young boy named Romulo Hiramato wondered these things and more. The old man that he'd become had never resolved those mysteries. This beautiful and wondrous object had become a totem for his life, representing the part of life unchangeable and immutable.

Claptrap

The boat mechanic droned on and on, describing the vast array of problems with the vessel, and the necessity of getting them fixed with urgency. It only took Sean John a few sentences to figure out what he was saying is pure claptrap. The man just thought he could squeeze money out of a high profile client.

Geomancy

The ancestral religion native to these islands made use of nature in some interesting ways for certain rituals and traditions. Among its superstitions was a practice in geomancy. Religious leaders mapped changes in the landscape as predictors in the judgements of the gods.

Fallacy

Sean John's enemies spread vicious rumors about him and his methods, planting stories in the media for the public to lap up and believe. Too many people believed that Sean John whipped and tortured his sharks - that he could only tame his sharks through force. This was a complete fallacy. He never harmed his sharks. These were lies that would erode mass public support for Sean John the Shark Tamer.

Fusty

Even though the sun was shining on a bright summer day, the inside of Sheryl's apartment was near pitch black. Desperately in need of a modern update, this fusty place made her feel isolated.

Tuesday, February 25, 2014

Sciamachy

Smoke curled in the stagnant air. A huddled figure peered out from behind a curtain, pupils shutting. The darkness of the living room an artificial construct, he squinted at the light. Davis needed to keep an eye out. There were many enemies coming for him.

Sean John felt sorry for long time friend. He watched Davis slowly devolve into a state of paranoia. He thought he was engaging enemies, but his conflicts were truthfully sciamachy. He was his own worst enemy.

Malinger

Francis heard Mom coming up the stairwell. He hurried off his windowsill and threw down the ping pong paddle, scurrying back to bed and under the covers. He put on his best sick face. If he was going to malinger all day, he needed to convince Mom the most. If she found out, she would surely put him to work.

Columbine

They little girl is forever frozen in her moment of awe. One of the medieval artist's most halcyon paintings, her face hopeful and expectant, looking towards something off in the distance, the white glow of her body indicating her columbine purity. Doves in the sky.

The headline claimed of Sean John's impropriety. He tried to think of it as only a shallow razzing, but his publication told him it might really turn public tide against him.

Salchow

Marianne Syan glowed in a middle of the ice rink. Her spectacular grace gained momentum with each slice of the ice. Seeming to simplify float off the surface, she climbed into the air and landed the double salchow.
Sean John watched the performance on his tiny satellite television from the deck of his boat in the Pacific, and prayed. If Marianne didn't get at least a 9, the Russian skating team would score lower than Hawaii, and Dr. Pantigal's plan would be set into motion.

Bestiary

Even though he wasn't a native to the island, Sean John was seen by many natives to be a definite link in their culture's stories. In their own traditional Bestiary there are tales of a man who comes from far away who uses his purity to control the animals. Sean John is seen to be this mythical man.

Ailurophilia

It was like the outline of of every piece of a jigsaw puzzle was drawn for him. He could always see the patterns, knew what was coming. This culture, this society, had a deep change coming up. The ailurophilia of the people was just an indicator of distraction, of need to shove our focus onto something else, in this case cute innocent feline creatures.

Thursday, February 13, 2014

Pluvial

There's nothing quiet like a good swim in the ocean on a pluvial day. After you thrust down as far as you can, exploring just the shallow waters beneath the surface, you emerge into daylight with welcoming raindrops splashing on your skin. It just seems like nature's way of saying this is supposed to be a swimming day.

Tuesday, February 11, 2014

Sooth

In all my years as a bartender, I never met anyone coming through the bar quite like Jeremy Wilkins. Boy, could that man talk. He wasn't just a aimless bombast, his words would really catch you and make you wanna pay attention to what he's saying, even if you had to pay attention to 10 other people at the same time to get a good tip. I never could figure out if most of what he said was pure sooth, or if it was chiefly a string of yarns his brilliant mind was generating.

Blatherskite

Sean John had been at the airport bar for over an hour. Just your standard collection of selfish travelers on their way to somewhere else they're meant to be. The bartender relaxed against a stool, prepping glasses for the upcoming lunch rush. Some blatherskite sat a few chairs down and wouldn't quit running at his mouth to no-one in particular.

Sunday, February 9, 2014

Dulcify

Too late, Sean John received the warning. The water was thick with the mind-altering aggressive hormones. Now, frantic sharks marauded haphazardly just under the surface, snapping at each other. If Sean John didn't figure out a way to dulcify these amped up creatures, he would have a big bloody mess on his hands.

Schuss

Sean John should have known his enemies would take advantage of him in this foreign environment on the ski slopes. Now they were just behind him, and he was all alone. Time to schuss down the hill. He set his skis straight, leaned forward, and let gravity guide him.

Neologize

The performer had them captivated. Pacing around the ring of audience out here in the village square, he spun his story to a rhythm. He recalled a tale old and new at the same time, based on a traditional village fable with spontaneous twists and turns. We heard him use archaic words we all recognized. We heard him neologize and make words we never heard before but all understood.

Idem

The legends spoke of a spherical so smooth that it newer stopped rolling. An endlessly round object of the deepest exotic purple that any man has ever lay eyes on. This Aba'Le'Wa, or Essence Stone, is one of the sacred objects gifted to Earth by the deities. On a quest to retrieve idem, Sean John swam deeper and deeper into the watery abyss.

Tuesday, January 21, 2014

Williwaw

Sean John's feet skimmed on top of the water. He could feel the water and the air starting to chill. He had never taken his sharks this far north. Dr Pantigal knew his sharks couldn't operate at full strength up here. Worse yet, Sean John was being informed on his HUD that there was a williwaw a few miles from them. Sean John wasn't sure if he could handle those winds on these sharks.

Now, theirs was a culture of misology, never to trust the same kind of reasoning proposed by the scientist.

The antebellum fashion of the culture was rife with bright colors and eye-catching designs. Once the war started, fashion took a precipitous drop to the dull and solid.

Hurdy-gurdy

Ka'lai'wei, the island nation Princess with the long, flowing hair thrown back by the wind, whispered into Sean John's ear. Her arms wrapped tightly around the Shark Tamer, bare chest pressed against his body. The two sped along the ocean, standing upright, feet just below the surface of the water. Two deep gray fins marked their vessels beneath them. Sean John shifted his arms on his hurdy-gurdy, and started to play the song requested by the Princess.

Wamble

After the drinking contest, all he could do was stumble out the door of the bar and wamble down the street, relying on instinct to guide him home safely.

Thursday, January 9, 2014

Comport

Sean John was mystified. Darien the Shark was swimming wildly out of control after every order. This did not comport with his training at all, and was totally unlike him. Sean John was going to have to check this one out up close.

Wednesday, January 8, 2014

Welkin

The canoe floated along, drifting just as lazily as the man lying his back in it. Sure of the safety of the ocean, Sean John's gaze was fixed upon the welkin, drawing from the clouds any kind of guidance he could decipher.

Monday, January 6, 2014

Terminus

The foaming stream behind his boat was thick and vicious. Sean John felt himself mesmerized. Over 40 hours without sleep, and he was starting to lose the ability to concentrate. He wrenched his eyes up and scanned the ocean horizon. His day wouldn't be reaching its terminus until Dr. Pantigal was stopped. Or until his fatigue made him do something really stupid.

Delitescent

You wouldn't think it from looking at him, but little 5 foot tall Kimbo Dredd has a delitescent strength that he reveals only when he chooses.

Thursday, January 2, 2014

Endemic

It's one of Sean John's little pleasures in life - among many benefits of living in this Pacific nation island. He looked through his sunglasses at all the lovely ladies walking along the beach clad in that sleek modern adaptation of the hulu skirt endemic to the fashion of this nation.
